The Spanish would say I love you like this ................. te amo
But the French would say I love you like this ....... je t'aime
..they both tend to put the "object" before the verb ( t', te) but the big difference is that the Spanish tend to not bother with the "yo" unless they really want to emphasise it. "Yo te amo" would mean I love you, not anybody else .. ME !
The Spanish expect the listener to work out from the verb ending exactly who is doing the loving! And that's true whether it's"I" or "you" or "he" or "she" or "us" or " you lot" or "they" ... they generally don't say it, you have to pick it up from the verb ending.
This can be quite a problem for English learners of Spanish, who are not used to having to listen out for every verb ending as a matter of routine, because we usually put the "I /you/he/she/we/you lot/they in front as well.
And let's remember the Latin source for all this stuff ... they had to mostly depend on the endings as well ... but in the case of Latin ( no pun intended) the nouns had endings as well to which you had to pay careful attention . Ouch!
So how come the French decided to start putting the Je/tu/il/elle/on/nous/vous/ils/elles in front of the verb routinely ?
Well, surprise surprise, I have a cunning theory to explain it ... which I hope is true ... and here it is !
Think about how the conjugation of the present tense of " aimer " sounds for all the singulars and the 3rd person plural .....
aime ... aimes .... aime..... aiment
..the verb parts all sound the same ! You can't tell just by listening if they mean "I" or "you" or "he" or "they" ...because the ending isn't sounded....you really need those je or tu or elle or ils to be spoken or else you won't know who it is .
So ... a bit of "language evolution" there ... the Spanish have stuck to the original Latin system, and the French have not exactly "dropped" the endings, they just don't actually "say" quite a few of them. Bob is your Uncle.
Now, I'm going to put on a song we've had before ... the very title embodies some of what I've been writing about " Come YO te amo" here's Niños Mutantes with a brilliant performance of a smashing song ... and come to think of it, a fine video too ...
